Engineering students to exhibit design projects
ANN ARBOR—Senior students from the University of Michigan College of Engineering will display the results of their semester-long design and manufacturing efforts at Winter Design Expo ’99. The event, which is free and open to the public, is 1:30-5 p.m. on April 15 in the atrium of North Campus’ Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building.
“The Department of Mechanical Engineering created the Expo in 1992 to showcase the excellent work of our students in ME 450, a senior-level design course,” noted A. Galip Ulsoy, chair of the department and the William Clay Ford Professor of Engineering.
“At the beginning of each term, student teams select projects and are tasked with developing a validated design and a working prototype,” said Ulsoy. “At the end of the term, the teams present their work at the Expo for the course instructors to evaluate and the public to enjoy.”
This year’s projects, which total 19, run the gamut from a wheelchair that adapts to the growth of a child to a nutrient-rich misting system that encourages the growth of plants in air.
