First Arab woman to win Nobel Peace Prize to speak at U-M

EVENT: Yemeni human rights activist Tawakkul Karman, the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, will give a free public speech, entitled “Women in the Arab Spring,” at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In Yemen, the outspoken Karman is known as the “Iron Woman” and the “Mother of Revolution.” Her brief arrest in January helped ignite protests by hundreds of thousands demanding that the country’s authoritarian regime be toppled and replaced by a democratic government.

MEDIA: Reporters planning to attend should RSVP by noon Friday, Nov. 11 to: [email protected]. Media credentials are required. Reporters with computers, cameras and other equipment must arrive by 3:30 p.m. on the day of the event for a security check. Karman will be available to media immediately following the lecture.

Limited parking will be available for media at bagged meters on Washington St. An audio multbox will be provided.
