Ford School of Public Policy panel discussion on welfare reform

ANN ARBOR—Experts in social welfare policy will discuss the results of the landmark 1996 welfare reform law, its impact on the poor in America, and the future of welfare with the reauthorization in 2001 in a public debate at 4 p.m. Sept. 7 in Anderson Room D, Michigan Union.

“Welfare Reform Reauthorization 2001: What Have We Learned from the Past Four Years?” is sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

Panelists include:

• Rebecca Blank, dean of the Ford School and former member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers
• Ron Haskins, staff director of the Subcommittee on Human Resources of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee
• Sheldon Danziger, U-M professor of social work and public policy, and director of the Research and Training Center on Poverty, the Underclass, and Public Policy
• Lawrence Mead, professor of politics at New York University and author of the books “Beyond Entitlement” and “The New Politics of Poverty”
• Mary Corcoran, U-M professor of political science, public policy, social work and women’s studies;
• moderator Jeffrey Lehman, dean of the U-M Law School.
