EVENT: “The Future of Data Science: A Convergence of Academia, Industry and Government,” a symposium that will draw top data scientists from around the country.

The event marks the launch of the Michigan Institute for Data Science, the centerpiece of the the University of Michigan’s recently announced $100 million investment in data science. It will highlight current research across the spectrum of data science; examine data science challenges in health, learning analytics, social science and transportation; discuss regional, national and international data science initiatives and partnerships; and explore possibilities for collaboration with industry.

In addition to a host of U-M leaders, speakers include:

• Daniel Goroff, vice president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Goroff will give the keynote address, “Privacy and Reproducibility in Data Science.” 1:30-2:15 p.m. More details
• Robert Nowak, the McFarland-Bascom Professor of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin. In a talk titled “Machine Learning for Data Science,” Nowak will discuss both the cutting-edge applications and the challenges of this technique that enables computers to learn by example. 9:20-9:45 a.m. More details
• Kathleen McKeown, director of the Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering at Columbia University. In a talk titled “At the Intersection of Data Science and Language,” McKeown will present a system that predicts the future impact of a scientific concept based on several categories of unstructured data on the web. 10:15-10:40 a.m. More details
• Nandit Soparkar, CEO of Ubiquiti Networks, will present a talk titled “Focusing on the Inputs for the Data Sciences.” He will discuss difficulties with inputs generally for data science, and specifically text and natural language inputs in the automotive and health care sectors. 11:45 a.m.-12:05 p.m. More details
• George Poste, chief scientist, Complex Adaptive Systems at Arizona State University, will discuss big data and the evolution of precision, or personalized, medicine. 2:20-2:45 p.m. More details
• Bror Saxberg, chief learning officer at Kaplan Inc., will speak on how learning can be enhanced through technology, in a talk titled “Learning Engineering: Using Evidence to Lift Learning Performance.” 2:45-3:10 p.m. More details
• Kathleen Carley, professor of computation, organization and society at Carnegie Mellon University, will discuss how analyzing big data could aid in disaster warning and crisis response. 3:15-3:40 p.m. More details
