Gallery, talk highlight strength of refugees and their community
EXHIBIT ANNOUNCEMENT
DATE: Gallery, Aug. 27-Oct. 6; reception, 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11
EVENT: Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.
This exhibit uses the data collected from a photovoice project, combining photography and transcriptions from group discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand their lived experiences. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security, Interpersonal Difficulties, Rooting Factors, Personal Growth, and Contribution.
The opening reception will include speakers Andrea Belgrade, doctoral candidate, U-M Department of Psychology; Odessa Gonzalez Benson, assistant professor, U-M School of Social Work; Ayah Kutmah, founder of REvive; Mari Kira, research scientist, U-M Department of Psychology; and Dilli Gautam, president, Bhutanese Community of Michigan.
PLACE: Hatcher Gallery, Room 100, Hatcher Graduate Library, 913 S. University Ave., Ann Arbor
