EVENT: “Gender and Sexuality in the Islamic Culture”
Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer and human rights activist, will deliver a lecture about perceptions of gender in Islamic societies.
Ebadi contends that despite cultural, social, political and governmental differences in Islamic countries, they all have one thing in common: patriarchal culture. Women are are humiliated on the one hand, but seen as a symbol of family honor on the other.
The lecture will also focus on the serious challenges to the perception of gender and its related laws and regulations.
Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her significant and pioneering efforts for democracy and human rights—especially women’s, children’s and refugee rights.
