Global scholars gather for U-M conference on television studies

EVENT: “Television and Television Studies in the 21st Century” will bring established and emerging scholars from around the globe to discuss the future of television and TV studies. All sessions are free and open to the public.

The conference will address television’s cultural and political impact by focusing on key topics including globalization, the ongoing digital transition, and politics and citizenship. Each panel session will feature a keynote speaker followed by three respondents.

  • Television’s Past, Present and Future

    Charlotte Brunsdon of the University of Warwick analyzes television and film cultures in books and articles on topics ranging from London in cinema to public debates about the erection of satellite dishes.
  • Television and the Nation in an Era of Globalization
    
Graeme Turner of the University of Queensland is one of the leading figures in cultural and media studies in Australia and internationally. His research covers literature, film, television, radio, new media, journalism and popular culture.
  • Digital Television
    
James Bennett of the University of London examines digital television and culture, production cultures and public service broadcasting.
  • Television and Politics
    
Horace Newcomb of the University of Georgia has written extensively about television for more than four decades. He is editor of The Museum of Broadcast Communications Encyclopedia of Television, a three-volume, reference work containing more than 1,000 essays on television-related topics.
  • Television, Text and Identity

    Herman Gray of the University of California-Santa Cruz is published widely in the areas of cultural studies, popular culture, mass communication and minority discourse.
