Halloween safety tips
ANN ARBOR—As Halloween approaches, the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety (DPS) offers the following tips to ensure a safe and happy holiday:
Costumes:
? Wear costumes that are made from flame resistant materials.
? Wear light-colored clothing that is short enough to prevent tripping.
? Use makeup or masks that can be easily seen through.
? Wear hats that do not cover the eyes.
? Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords; substitute with foam rubber, which is soft and flexible.
? Keep costumed children away from pets; the pet may not recognize the child and become frightened.
Trick-Or-Treating:
? Adults should accompany young children.
? Go out in daylight.
? Carry a flashlight in case of delay.
? Add reflective tape to costumes if walking in the dark.
? Watch for traffic.
• Travel only within the neighborhood and only visit homes you know.
• Never get in a car with a stranger or someone you don’t trust.
Candy:
• Give and accept only wrapped or packaged candy.
• Throw away any candy or food that is not wrapped or packaged by the candy company.
• Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it.
• Contact the police if there are any suspicious treats.
