EVENT: The University of Michigan Center for the Education for Women welcomes Jo Luck, president and CEO of Heifer International, as the 2007 Mullin Welch Speaker. In areas where there has been conflict, Heifer helps communities by providing them with livestock and training that lead to a values-based, sustainable lifestyle that helps them put their differences aside.

Through the simple idea of giving families a source of food by sending cows, sheep, buffalo, chickens or a number of other livestock, rather than short-term relief, 4 million families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.

In remarks entitled “Extraordinary Ordinary People,” Luck will share her experiences of helping communities to create sustainable small-scale farm enterprises and thus meet their nutritional, economic, environmental, and social needs. She will also discuss the importance of education, employment and financial independence to alleviate poverty for future generations

Heifer International, an Arkansas-based nonprofit organization, is dedicated to ending the cycle of chronic hunger and poverty that plagues two-thirds of the planet.
