ANN ARBOR—Homer Neal, director of the UM-ATLAS Collaboratory Project and professor of physics at the University of Michigan, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Applications Strategy Council (ASC), an advisory committee “that will guide higher education’s advanced networking efforts, including the Internet2 project.”

“We are especially pleased that Prof. Neal will advise Internet2,” said Doug Van Houweling, president and CEO of University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID). “His long experience in major collaborations in the physics community and commitment to the use of advanced networking to enhance the ability of physicists worldwide to participate in the very large experiments now under way gives him a unique perspective on the benefit and direction of Internet2.”

The ASC advises the Board of Trustees of UCAID on matters related to priorities for Internet2’s applications initiatives. The group also assists in determining how to gain maximum participation from the university community in building the applications enabled by Internet2.

Members of the ASC were appointed by the UCAID Board of Trustees for one-, two-, and three-year terms to provide for staggered rotation of terms. Selected from a list of candidates submitted by a nominating committee, those appointed to the Council possess substantial experience in the conceptualization, functionality, technical design, development and use of computer applications for research and education which utilize advanced networking facilities.

The 12-member team represents a broad range of universities and information technology organizations from across the United States.
