Hopwood writing awards presented to eight students
ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan has announced student winners of the summer term Avery Hopwood and Jule Hopwood Awards in writing.
The awards are funded by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother. Past winners include Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller, poet John Ciardi and novelist/poet Marge Piercy. Current winners include:
Nonfiction
- Joshua Mandilk, class of 2017 English and health and fitness major from Commerce Township, Mich., for “Muted Grays: We Love to Wander and Garage Time,” $1,500.
- Karen Duan, class of 2017 architecture major from Ann Arbor, for “This Is the Bed You Will Dream On,” $1,200.
Fiction
- Daniel Berry, class of 2016 English major from Clinton Township, Mich., for “A Little Water and The Cantaloupe Woman,” $1,200.
- Pei Hao, class of 2017 LSA biochemistry and English major from Ann Arbor, for “Two Stories,” $1,000.
Poetry
- Sofia Fall, class of 2018 honors English and political science major from Ann Arbor, for “I Remember That,” $1,200.
- Lang DeLancey, class of 2017 biology major from Ann Arbor, for “It Continues to Be a Beautiful Day,” $1,000.
The Marjorie Rapaport Award in Poetry
- Adie Dolan, class of 2017 biopsychology, cognition and neuroscience major from Lake Ann, Mich., for “What It Is Like to Want Something,” $600.
- Susan Lamoreaux, class of 2017 art and design and German major from Ann Arbor, for “Can I Make a Mountain?” $500.
