ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan’s Media Union Gallery will host a multimedia exhibit of 13 visions inspired by the Great Lakes region.

“Revisioning the Great Lakes” illustrates, celebrates, educates and honors a pertinent collection of environmental, social, political, aesthetic and historic dynamics of the Great Lakes region. This visual compilation provides views of the past and present while helping to forge a timely new vision for the future.

Each of the pieces grew out of a collaborative effort led by Joe Trumpey and Sadashi Inuzuka, professors in U-M’s School of Art and Design. The participants spent three months studying the Great Lakes region, attending lectures by Michigan Sea Grant and the Great Lakes Science Center, spending time on the SchoolShip, and visiting various ecosystems of the area. Each artist used this accumulation of knowledge to prepare for the exhibit, resulting in a well researched and intellectually challenging synthesis of the incredibly complex set of systems that surround this area.

Those artists contributing to the exhibit include Kira Campbell, Gerit Grimm, Sadashi Inuzuka, Beili Liu, Jessie Macgonigal, Colin Matthes, Gerry Moll, Jessica Philbin, Paul Schaap, Philip Stead, Matthew Tailford, Joseph Trumpey, and Oliver Uberti.

The exhibit will open Dec. 14 and run through Jan. 7. An opening reception will be held in the Gallery Dec. 14, 7-9 p.m. The U-M Media Union Gallery is located at 2281 Bonisteel Blvd. on U-M’s North Campus. The Gallery is accessed from inside the Media Union and is open noon-5 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
