In response to media reports concerning residency status of military families

The University of Michigan is deeply sympathetic to the unique circumstances of military families. Current University guidelines allow state of Michigan residents who join the military to retain their residency status, both for themselves and their dependents, throughout their military service regardless of where they are stationed.

Military families who are residents of other states and come to Michigan for a temporary assignment at one of our military bases are eligible to receive a waiver of the nonresident portion of tuition and pay resident tuition rates while stationed here. Historically, these policies have addressed the residency concerns of virtually all military families whose children attend the University of Michigan.

The circumstances of the young man who was accepted to the University of Michigan have identified a gap in our guidelines. Under current policy, a student whose non-Michigan military family leaves the state after being temporarily stationed would not qualify for the tuition waiver. As a result, we are reviewing our policies.

In the meantime, the University has identified means by which this particular student?s concerns will be addressed.
