Kite festival marks 50th anniversary of U-M Center for Chinese Studies

DATE: Kite Fly-A-Thon: 5 p.m.-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23, 2011.

Kite festival: 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25.

EVENTS:

  • Master kite fliers showcase their skills with demonstrations at a Kite Fly-A-Thon celebrating the 50th anniversary of the U-M Center for Chinese Studies. The event will take place at Ferry Field (outdoor track), University of Michigan, 1150 S. State St., Ann Arbor. Free and open to the public.
  • A kite festival to celebrate the center’s anniversary involves a kite-flying competition with U-M students and demonstrations by master kite makers from China and Michigan. All kite lovers are invited to participate by bringing their own self-crafted kites. The festival will also include Chinese ribbon dancing, yo-yo demonstrations, lion dances, taiko drumming, zithers and a community art table. The event will be held at U-M’s Nichol’s Arboretum, 1610 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor. Free and open to the public.
