Life Sciences Program Sunday evening lecture series
ANN ARBOR—A University of Michigan lecture series focusing on new developments in the life sciences resumes Jan. 27 with a presentation by physician and scientist Marie Csete on stem cells.
U-M’s Life Sciences Values and Society Program hosts the Outreach Lecture Series on Sunday evenings. The discussions of scientific developments and related social effects feature U-M experts presenting a wide range of topics. Rebecca Eisenberg, U-M professor of law and a nationally known expert on intellectual property and biotechnology, moderates the discussions.
Speakers scheduled for the winter term are:
Jan. 27—Marie Csete: “A Stem Cell Primer.” Csete is associate professor of anesthesiology and assistant professor of cell and developmental biology. Her laboratory studies the role of gases in regulating growth and development of stem cells, and her major clinical interest is liver transplantation.
Feb. 3—Marie Csete: “Stem Cells from the Outside In.”
Feb. 10—Richard Miller: “Are There Genes for Aging?” Miller, professor of pathology, studies the genetics of aging and immunity, especially in mice. He also is an associate director for research in the Geriatrics Center, and is a research scientist at the Institute of Gerontology and at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center.
Feb. 17—Richard Miller: “Extending Human Longevity: Scientific Prospects and Political Obstacles.”
All lectures are scheduled for 7:30-9 p.m. in Room 100 of Hutchins Hall, in U-M’s Law Quad, at the corner of State and Monroe streets in Ann Arbor. Informal discussion and refreshments will follow. There is no cost to attend.
