The following is a statement issued today (Aug. 4) from University of Michigan President Lee C. Bollinger:

“For the past two weeks I have listened carefully to the responses of many faculty, staff and retirees to the proposal known as the M-Care Preference Initiative, a plan to give preferred payment rates to employees choosing M-Care HMO as their health care provider. I want to thank all of the more than 1,500 employees who wrote in response to this proposal, and to SACUA and its former chairs who met with me to discuss the proposal.

“I have now concluded that this proposal needs further consideration before we decide to implement it. It is my intention to table the discussion of the M-Care proposal until the fall.

“Accordingly, we will not include the M-Care Preference Initiative in the budget for the University of Michigan Health System that we will present to the Board of Regents during our special meeting via telephone conference call on Wednesday morning (Aug. 6). We will present an alternative way to balance the Health System budget, as required by the resolution passed by the Regents at their meeting on July 18.”
