Mary Sue Coleman to receive Women in Leadership Award

DATE: 4 p.m.
EVENT: University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman will receive the 2004 Women in Leadership Award, presented annually by the Women in Business Initiative and Michigan Business Women since 1993. The award recognizes the achievements of outstanding women leaders in promoting the success of women.

Coleman is also a professor of biological chemistry at the Medical School and professor of chemistry at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Prior to becoming Michigan’s 13th president in 2002, she served as president of the University of Iowa for seven years.

Coleman also has held leadership roles at the University of North Carolina, University of New Mexico and University of Kentucky, where she taught for 19 years. In addition, she serves on the executive committee of the Association of American Universities, the board of directors of the American Council of Education and the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s board of directors, and co-chairs the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance.
