EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: 2-4 p.m. Sept. 26, 2013

EVENT: Author, journalist and environmental activist Mark Lynas will be the featured guest at a symposium titled “Why is it hard to pivot based on science? Managing the tension between personal conviction and scientific evidence.”

Over the past two years, Lynas dramatically and publicly reversed his position on biotechnology and food based on scientific evidence. He will discuss the challenges of shifting positions and the importance of moving with the evidence, even when it conflicts with long-held convictions.

Following the presentation, Lynas will join a panel of experts to explore a range of high profile issues such as climate change, hydraulic fracking and genetically modified foods. Other panelists include Rhona Applebaum, vice president and chief science and health officer for Coca Cola Co.; Dan Kahan, professor of law and psychology at Yale Law School; and Bob Inglis, executive director for the Enterprise and Energy Initiative and former member of U.S. House of Representatives.

PLACE: Great Lakes Room, Palmer Commons Building, 100 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor

SPONSOR: U-M Risk Science Center
