The 2024 election season is underway—as more voters pay close attention to which candidates and issues best serve them.

But unlike previous years, the battle for the White House will be anything but normal because democracy could be jeopardized, says University of Michigan political expert Vincent Hutchings in a new Michigan Minds podcast.

Most attention will focus on the presidential elections. How would you describe where the Republican Party is?

“The Republican Party is in a peculiar place,” Hutchings said. “There are really two issues: one is about their election strategy—their prospects for victory in the November of 2024. The other is about where they stand with respect to democracy … 2024 is not going to be a normal presidential contest because the leading candidate (Trump) for the election has essentially renounced the concept of democracy.”
