ANN ARBOR—A new 531-space parking structure near the University of Michigan medical campus is scheduled to open July 24, nearly three weeks ahead of its original schedule. Twenty-one spaces will be designated for visitor parking.

The new seven-level structure, in the 1100 block of East Ann Street across from the new Biomedical Science Research Building, connects on two levels to the existing Catherine Street parking structure just to the north. Most of the spaces, 485, will be designated for U-M blue parking permits, along with 15 for gold permits and 10 for U-M business vehicles. Motorcycle spaces and bicycle loops are provided on the ground floor.

Though reconstruction work of Ann Street continues in front of the new structure, vehicles will be able to access the structure traveling eastbound along the north side of the street from Glen Avenue.

“This structure will help us respond to the growing demand for parking facilities in the medical campus area,” said Dave Miller, executive director of U-M’s Parking and Transportation Services. “The visitor spaces are important for patients to the area research clinics. This facility along with convenient mass transportation services will help the Health System and Medical School faculty and staff continue to provide world-class education, research and medical services. “

Walker Parking, an international architecture and engineering firm from Kalamazoo that specializes in parking designs, designed the project. Polshek Partnership, the architectural firm responsible for the design of the new Biomedical Science Research Building, served as an advisor for design issues during the project. Parking resources funded the $13 million project budget.

U-M’s Parking and Transportation Services currently manages more than 23,000 parking spaces for faculty, staff, students and visitors, as well as provides mass transportation for more than 5.6 million passengers annually.
