O’Donnell to be Levin Professor of Engineering
ANN ARBOR—Prof. Matthew O’Donnell of the University of Michigan College of Engineering will be installed as the first Jerry W. and Carol L. Levin Professor of Engineering on Wednesday (April 14) at 3:30 p.m. The installation ceremony will be held in the Johnson Rooms of the Robert H. Lurie Engineering Center on North Campus.
O’Donnell holds joint appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His research interests, explored in the College’s Biomedical Ultrasonics Laboratory, include ground-breaking work in elasticity imaging, harmonic imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging. O’Donnell will speak on “Imaging Sound as Light” at this event.
O’Donnell has been recognized for his commitment to the classroom as well; he is one of only a few faculty members to have won both the College of Engineering Excellence in Research and Excellence in Teaching Awards.
The professorship is named for its benefactors: Jerry and Carol Levin. Jerry Levin is a graduate of the College of Engineering, receiving a bachelor of science in engineering degree in electrical engineering in 1966 and a bachelor of science in engineering degree in engineering mathematics in 1967. He is president and chief executive officer of the Sunbeam Corporation.
Carol Levin is an active participant in cultural and philanthropic affairs. She is the founder and chair of Women’s O.W.N., an organization dedicated to promoting women’s health issues. Also, she serves as a board member for a variety of women’s and children’s charities in New York City.
Jerry Levin will speak to those gathered at the installation ceremony via video conferencing technology, from his office in Florida.
