October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
ADVISORY
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month; these faculty can comment on this national problem:
Daniel G. Saunders, associate professor of social work, is an expert on the traumatic effects of domestic abuse, treatment of batterers, and attitudes of the public and professionals toward family violence. Recent publications have focused on physician detection of domestic abuse, post-traumatic stress of battered women, police arrests of domestic violence victims and child custody decisions in families of abused women. He can be reached at (313) 763-6415 or by e-mail at [email protected].
Richard M. Tolman, associate professor of social work, is an authority on family violence, abusive behavior, male responsibility and intervention programs for batterers. Recent research has addressed teen dating violence, repeat offenders and alternatives to jailing batterers. He also has developed a widely used measure of psychological maltreatment of women, which was cited in last year’s O.J. Simpson case. He can be reached at (313) 763-6571 or by e-mail at [email protected].
Sandra Graham-Bermann, assistant professor of psychology, is an expert on the impact of domestic violence on women and children. She is currently studying the social expectations and adjustment of children ages three through 12 in woman-abusing families and also is testing the efficacy of a brief intervention program designed to provide support and education about domestic violence. She can be reached at (313) 763-3159 or by e-mail at [email protected].
Anna M. Santiago, associate research scientist, Center for the Education of Women and Population Studies Center, studies minority victims of domestic violence. The issues of access to services and barriers to services are of special interest to Santiago, whose survey of 176 Latina women from a large Midwestern metro area showed that 40 percent had experienced physical abuse during the past year, but only 12 percent said they would seek help from formal support systems, including clergy, counselors or other agencies. She can be reached at (313) 998-7080 or by e-mail at [email protected].
