Pamela Trotman Reid to head Women’s Studies ProgramANN ARBOR—Pamela Trotman Reid, University of Michigan professor of education and psychology and research scientist in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, has been named director of the U-M’s Women’s Studies Program, effective July 1. The appointment was recently announced by Shirley Neuman, dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA).

In her announcement, Neuman cited Reid’s considerable administrative experience and noted her commitment to “maintaining and building on the strong existing connections between Women’s Studies and other LSA departments, and to increasing the number and range of connections with the professional schools.”

“We have some fantastic opportunities to reach out and strengthen our ties with faculty throughout the University,” Reid says. She also is particularly interested in the prospect of expanding the program’s international reach.

Prior to coming to the U-M Reid was interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the City University of New York. She has published extensively on issues dealing with gender and ethnicity, with a particular focus on African American girls and women.

Founded in 1973, the U-M’s Women’s Studies Program is one of the most mature programs in the country, one which stands out for its range of interdisciplinary scholarship. It also offers one of the few doctoral programs in the country, through joint programs in women’s studies/psychology and women’s studies/English.
