Perspectives on Tennessee Williams, a great American playwright

EVENT: The University of Michigan Department of Theatre & Drama presents a four-day conference, “Tennessee Williams @ 100.” The conference kicks off with a keynote address by award-winning playwright Christopher Durang, who will discuss his connections to Tennessee Williams’ work and share excerpts from his parody, “Desire, Desire, Desire.”
Durang’s address is at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in Stamps Auditorium inside the Walgreen Drama Center (1226 Murfin, Ann Arbor on the University of Michigan North Campus).
Throughout the conference, scholars, playwrights and theatre artists will share their perspectives and present papers on Williams’ impact on American theatre, the American consciousness, and his enduring influence on contemporary playwrights. Discussion topics include identity, sexuality, race, religion, age, class, and culture, as they relate to the body of Williams’ work.
Panel moderators include Enoch Brater, the Kenneth T. Rowe Professor of Dramatic Literature and professor of theatre; Leigh Woods, professor of theatre; Philip Kerr, the Claribel Baird Halstead Professor of Theatre; and, E.J. Westlake, associate professor of theatre and director of “Suddenly Last Summer,” a play by Tennessee Williams to be performed Oct. 6-16 at the Arthur Miller Theatre.
All conference events are free (with the exception of the performances of “Suddenly Last Summer”) and open to the public.
