Photojournalist to speak in recognition of the 5th anniversary of Iraq war
DATE: 7 p.m., April 8, 2008.
EVENT: Iraq Uncensored: Images from U.S.-Led Wars in 1991 and 2003.
Internationally known photographer Peter Turnley will give a public lecture describing the human realities of two wars with Iraq, the Gulf War in 1991 and the current invasion. Turnley refused to participate in the pool and embedded system of press coverage of both wars, choosing to work independently of the U.S. military. Many of the images he will show have been rarely seen by the American and international public.
Turnley is currently an artist in residence lecturing at the University of Michigan Residential College during the winter semester 2008. His photo exhibit, “McClellan Street,” is running through April 18 at the Residential College Art Gallery. The April 8 event represents the official culmination of Turnley’s residency; following the visual lecture will be an open discussion about the current war led by Charles Bright, Residential College director and professor of history.
Turnley’s images have appeared on the cover of Newsweek 43 times. He is a contributing editor and photographer for Harper’s Magazine where he creates regular multipage photo essays. He has covered nearly every major news event of international significance over the past 20 years and has won many awards, including the Overseas Press Club Award for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad. Turnley has published five books: “Beijing Spring,” “Moments of Revolution,” “In Times of War and Peace,” “Parisians,” and “McClellan Street.”
The event is free and open to the public.
