ANN ARBOR—The appointment of Fawwaz Ulaby as vice president for research will be recommended to the University of Michigan Board of Regents at its March meeting. The appointment would be effective March 19.

“During his short tenure as interim vice president, Fawwaz has exhibited outstanding leadership skills and a deep understanding of the issues associated with this vital position,” said U-M Provost Nancy Cantor. “With his background and his extensive knowledge of the University, we anticipate a quick transition to his new role.”

Ulaby became interim vice president for research Jan. 1, succeeding Frederick C. Neidhardt. Ulaby is the R. Jamison and Betty Williams Professor of Engineering, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor. Ulaby has been with the University since 1984, directing large, interdisciplinary NASA projects aimed at the development of high-resolution satellite sensors for mapping Earth’s terrestrial environment, including forest type, biomass and carbon content.

For the past 10 years he also has served as director of a $13 million NASA-funded Center for Space Terahertz Technology.
