Professor to give keynote address at Green Party convention

BERLIN—Andrei Markovits, a professor in the University of Michigan Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, will be the keynote speaker at a prominent Green Party convention on Sept. 1-2 in Berlin, Germany.

Markovits has served on the faculties of Wesleyan University, Boston University, and University of California at Santa Cruz. He has held academic appointments and fellowships at several universities abroad, including Osnabrueck University and Bochum University in Germany; Innsbruck University in Austria; Tel Aviv University; and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advance Study Berlin).

A specialist on the politics of Western and Central Europe, Markovits has written several books, scholarly articles, and review essays, and has appeared in many international articles and interviews. In 1983, he founded the quarterly journal German Politics and Society, which has become the foremost scholarly journal on modern German politics in the United States.

Markovits was born in Romania and emigrated with his father first to Vienna and then to New York. He attended Columbia University where he obtained five degrees, including a doctorate (’76) in political science.
