Prospective student Winter Commencement speaker deadline

ANN ARBOR—The deadline for the University of Michigan’s prospective student Winter Commencement speakers to submit speeches for consideration is 5 p.m. Oct. 19. The commencement will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 16 in Crisler Arena.

The competition is open to U-M students who will be receiving a bachelor’s degree during Summer Term 2001 or Fall Term 2001. Submissions consist of a typed draft of the speech—five minutes or less in length—as well as an audiocassette of the author delivering the speech. Students also are asked to submit a curriculum vita or resume highlighting scholarship and campus leadership, and including an e-mail address and local phone number where they can be reached. A cover letter is not necessary.

A committee of students, faculty and staff selects the student commencement speaker. Committee members look for a speech that emphasizes academic pursuits and experiences unique to the U-M and that is brief and well written. Former Golden Apple Award winners Brenda K. Gunderson, lecturer in statistics, and Ralph G. Williams, professor of English, are among those who serve on the student speaker selection committee.

Submit entries to the Office of the Vice President for Communications, 2040 Fleming Administration Building, Campus Zip 1340. Attention: Student Speaker Entries. For more information, contact Patty Mullaney at 615-0520 or by e-mail [email protected].
