ANN ARBOR—As a prelude to the University of Michigan Museum of Art‘s exhibit “Women Who Ruled: Queens, Goddesses, Amazons 1500-1650” various schools and programs within the University will present exhibits, symposia and films during January.

U-M’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the University’s Women’s Studies Program will present an installation by Matuschka.

Matuschka is an artist, former model, and breast cancer survivor known for her New York Times Magazine cover, a self-portrait prominently featuring her mastectomy scars. Her images include works that deal with race, gender and power. This installation will run through April in Lane Hall  [map] . Admission is free.

U-M’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center and U-M’s Center for the Education of Women will present a panel discussion, “Gender and Power in the Movement to Combat Violence Against Women,” with panelists including Debra Cain, executive director of the Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board, and Mary Keefe, executive director of the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. The discussion will begin at 4 p.m. Jan. 10 in the Center for the Education of Women’s conference room located at 330 East Liberty. Admission is free.

The “Dynamic Women Film Series” will open Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. with “La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc” (1928 France) starring Maria Falconetti, Eugene Silvain, and Antonin Artaud. This presentation is directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and will be accompanied with live organ music.

Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, and Ian Keith will star in “Queen Christina” (1933 U.S.A.) directed by Rouben Mamoulian. The film begins at 2 p.m. Jan. 27.

Both films will be shown in the Michigan Theater. Admission is $5 with free entry to U-M students with U-M identification.

The Winter Term theme semester “Gender, Power, and Representation” will officially open Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. with a screening of “The Heroic Trio” (1992 Hong Kong). This film, directed by Siu-Tung Ching, stars Anita Mui, Michelle Yeo, and Maggie Chung and will be shown in the Kuenzel Room of the Michigan Union.

Shirley Neuman, dean of the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and U-M Museum of Art Director James Steward will welcome participants. A desert reception will follow the screening. Admission is free and open to the public.
