Sousa comes to U-M in a celebration

ANN ARBOR—Turn back the clock with songs, dances and marches by John Philip Sousa as the music world and the University of Michigan Symphony Band acknowledge the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Sousa Band. Michael Haithcock, will conduct the U-M Symphony Band in two concerts (3 p.m. and 7 p.m.) Sunday, Oct. 20 at the Michigan Theater. Tickets are $12/$8 with group rates available. Tickets and additional information are available at the Michigan League box office at 734-764-2538. Haithcock will lead the band in a traditional Sousa concert featuring period classics, marches and other Sousa works. Joining the Symphony Band as soloists will be trumpeter and U-M professor William Campbell and soprano Janelle Celair, a doctoral student in vocal performance studying with U-M professor George Shirley. The program will include:

"Light Cavalry Overture" — Von Suppe "Fantasy for Cornet on Themes from La Traviata" — Ponchielli "Fantasie Humersque on ‘Yankee Doodle’ " — Reeves "Muzetta’s Waltz from La Boheme" — Puccini Compositions by Sousa will include:

"I’ve Made My Plans for the Summer" "La Reine de la Mer (Waltzes)" "The Gliding Girl (Tango)" "The Presidential Polonaise" "Pride of the Wolverines" "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine" "Washington Post" "Sempre Fi" "Who’s Who in Navy Blue" "US Field Artillery" "Stars and Stripes Forever" This program will replace the annual BAND-O-RAMA showcase.
