ANN ARBOR—Robert Pinsky, former U.S. poet laureate and professor of English at Boston University, and Marshall Sahlins, the Charles F. Grey Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Anthropology at the University of Chicago, will give commencement addresses at the University of Michigan graduation ceremonies April 27-29.

Honorary degrees will be awarded to Pinsky; Sahlins; William Davidson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Guardian Industries Corp.; Ruth Bader Ginsburg, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court; Bill Ivey, chair of the National Endowment for the Arts; and Adam Michnik, a founder of Poland’s Solidarity movement and outspoken human rights activist.

Pinsky will give the main speech at the Spring Commencement on April 28 in Michigan Stadium. At this event, beginning at 9:15 a.m., honorary degrees will be conferred and all undergraduate degree candidates will be recognized. Michael Stromayer will make remarks on behalf of the graduating students.

Sahlins will be the main speaker at the University Graduate Exercises in Hill Auditorium on April 27. Doctoral candidates and Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies master’s degree candidates will be honored at the ceremony, beginning at 3 p.m.

The U-M’s schools and colleges also will hold their own recognition ceremonies for their graduating students.

Altogether, some 6,000 students on the Ann Arbor campus expect their degrees this spring.
