ANN ARBOR—Janis M.
U-M Provost Nancy Cantor issued the following statement today (Sept. 12): “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of a valued member of our U-M family, and our hearts go out to all involved. We are providing counseling and support for Janis Marchyok’s family, for the driver, and other members of our community who are in need of assistance.”

“Her co-workers and I are all shocked and grieving at this great loss,” said David Ginsburg, M.D., head of the Medical Genetics Division. “We feel for her family, especially her three children, at this terrible time. We know that Jan will also be missed by the many patients she helped at our outpatient genetics clinic, who often commented on her special warmth and friendliness.”

Students who feel distressed or in need of support can contact Counseling and Psychological Services at 764-8312, Cantor said. Counselors in the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program are available to help co-workers and other staff members; they can be reached at 936-8660.

The Ann Arbor police are handling the investigation of the accident, and any questions about the accident should be directed there.
