Statement regarding Nike negotiations
ANN ARBOR—The following statement was issued by University of Michigan officials today in response to press statements released by Nike:
“The University of Michigan learned today that Nike has chosen again to strike out at universities committed to finding appropriate ways to safeguard and respect human rights. Michigan has kept Nike fully informed of all its actions and plans as Michigan and universities across the country seek an appropriate forum to address labor conditions in apparel manufacturing. In taking this drastic step, Nike is abruptly cutting off discussions and breaching our understandings. Despite Michigan’s long relationship with Nike, it appears that for the third time Nike is trying to make an example of a university. Michigan remains committed to its premier athletic program and respect for international human rights.”
U-M signed the original contract with Nike in 1994. The six-year contract, worth approximately $7-million, outfitted U-M athletic department teams with shoes and apparel and provided additional support, including scholarships.
