Student engineers gather for National Leadership Institute
ANN ARBOR—On
NSBE is the largest student-managed organization in the country, comprised of more than 10,000 members at 250 student chapters and 50 alumni extension chapters. Its mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
Participants will attend workshops corresponding with their positions for the 2000-2001 school year: for instance, Public Relations Chair, Parliamentarian or Treasurer. Within the context of each workshop, such skills as strategic planning, proposal and budget development, presentation skills, and motivating volunteers will be discussed and demonstrated through a variety of teaching methodologies. Participants will also break into groups to set direction for the six Regional Leadership Conferences, which focus on training chapter-level board members.
“The University of Michigan was chosen to host the NLI this year in recognition of the leadership role its students have assumed over the years in NSBE,” explained Lyonel Milton of the University’s Minority Engineering Program Office. “For the year 2000-2001 alone, Michigan engineers hold four positions at the national level and three at the regional level.”
