Student speaker for commencement chosen
ANN ARBOR—Peter Victor Katona of Springfield, Va., will be the student commencement speaker for the winter graduation ceremonies at the University of Michigan on Dec. 19.
Applicants for the position submit both a written speech and an audio tape. According to the U-M Office of University and Developments Events, the speeches are evaluated for their focus on the University as a whole, and for their portrayal of the academic experience at U-M.
“The quality of Peter’s speech definitely stood out,” said Mary Jo Frank, member of the selection committee. “His topics were relevant to a wide range of people, and his delivery was excellent.”
Katona transferred to U-M from Eotvos Lorandt University in Budapest, Hungary, where he also attended the American International School of Budapest during his high school career. He will receive a degree from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, with a dual major in philosophy and film and video studies. A residence hall and student peer adviser, Katona has directed, written and revised several films and screenplays. He is active in the intramural sports program, serving as both an official and a participant.
“At first, I couldn’t believe that I had been selected,” said Katona. “Now, as the day gets closer, I am getting more and more excited. My mom is, too.”
