Students earn thousands in Hopwood writing awards ANN ARBOR—Eleven University of Michigan students received $6,500 in awards for their outstanding essay, fiction and poetry writings from the Hopwood Awards Program.

Nicholas Delbanco, U-M professor of English and director of the Hopwood Awards Program, also presented $8,700 in awards for other literary contests during the Hopwood Awards ceremony.

Anna Clark, a U-M sophomore from St. Joseph, Mich., was a triple winner with two awards from the Hopwood Underclassmen Essay and Fiction categories and an award from the Louise and George Piranian Scholarship fund.

Funded by a bequest from U-M alumnus and Broadway playwright Avery Hopwood, the Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards are presented three times annually, with the major competition in April.
