The “Sights and Sounds of Greece” come to U-M ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan campus is one of only four venues in North America for the “Sights and Sounds of Greece: A tour of Hellenic culture.”

Continuing through Oct. 27, this mix of art, lectures, theater, cinema, and poetry comes to Ann Arbor through the sponsorship of U-M’s Foundation for Modern Greek Studies, its C.P. Cavafy Modern Greek Chair and U-M’s Hellenic Students Association.

Among the events is a continuing art exhibit in the Michigan Union Art Lounge featuring the work of 19 Greek-American artists. The exhibit is open 10 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Vicky Eggonopoulos, from the Art Institute of Chicago and one of the exhibiting artists, will engage visitors in the exhibit at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Michigan Union‘s Pond Room.

Readings of ancient Greek tragedy will be presented by U-M students with discussion led by scholars of classical theater at 5 p.m. Oct. 28 in Angell Hall C.

A poetry reading at the Shaman Drum Bookstore Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. will feature Eleni Sikelianos, an avant-garde, award-winning poet from New York.

The cinema series continues in Auditorium 2 of the Modern Languages Building with double features on Oct. 20 and 27. The Oct. 20 showings will be “The Canary Yellow Bicycle” at 6 p.m. and “The Mating Game” at 8 p.m. The Oct. 27 bill includes “Edge of the Night” at 6 p.m. and “Balkanisateur” at 8 p.m.

“In Good Company” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21; “Peppermint” at 6 p.m. Oct. 26; and “Cheap Smokes” at 8 p.m. Oct. 28.

“The decision to bring these events to our campus recognizes the fact that the University and the city of Ann Arbor have developed into a nationally eminent center for the study and celebration of all periods and facets of Greek culture,” says Vasilios Lambropoulos, U-M professor of modern Greek studies. “We are proud to host this multifaceted event in the multicultural environment of Ann Arbor.”
