Top authors read their works at U-M Visiting Writers Series

ANN ARBOR—Writers J.M. Coetzee, Marcie Hershman, and poet Don Paterson will share their work during free readings as part of the University of Michigan’s Visiting Writers Series.

Coetzee will read on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 5 p.m. at the Art and Architecture Auditorium in U-M’s North Campus. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Coetzee is the author of “Dusklands,” “The Age of Iron,” “Boyhood,” and many other titles. He is the recipient of the Booker Award and the CNA Prize, South Africa’s premier literary award. Coetzee is a professor of literature at the University of Cape Town.

Hershman will speak at 5 p.m. on Oct. 25, in Hale Auditorium. She is the author of several books—“Tales of the Master Race,” “Safe in America,” and the latest, “Speak to Me.” Her essays have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Boston Globe, Poets and Writers, and Tikkun. A former writer-in-residence at Brandeis University, she teaches at Tufts University.

Paterson, a native Australian, will be reading his poetry on Nov. 1 at 5 p.m., also in Hale Auditorium. Paterson is the recipient of a number of literary awards, including the T.S. Eliot Prize. His poetry collections include “The White Lie,” “God’s Gift to Women,” and “The Eyes.” He is currently poetry editor at Picador. In addition to his writing, Paterson plays jazz guitar. He has recorded five albums with his band, the Lammas.
