EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: 9 a.m., June 18, 2013.

EVENT: The first public appearance of the University of Michigan Solar Car team’s 2013 vehicle, named Generation. Generation will race in the 2013 World Solar Challenge – a week-long, 1,800-mile trek across the Australian continent in October.

The car is a radical departure from the vehicles the team has built and raced for the past decade, largely because of new event regulations that require four wheels as opposed to three and a more upright driver. Generation is more like a real-world vehicle than any of the team’s previous entries.

U-M’s powerhouse team is the reigning national champion, having finished first in the North American Solar Challenge seven times. It has come in third in the World Solar Challenge five times, most recently in 2011. That’s the last time the biennial world race was held.

Speakers include:

  • Jon Lauckner, General Motors chief technology officer and vice president of global R&D
  • Dave Taylor, vice president of global marketing at Siemens PLM

PLACE: GM Ren Center Wintergarden, 400 Renaissance Center, in Detroit. The event will be streamed live online at http://www.umsolar.com/.
