U-M event addresses eliminating food deserts in Detroit

EVENT: “Eliminating Food Deserts in Detroit: A Community Discussion” will feature Mari Gallagher, principal of Mari Gallagher Research and Consulting Group. She will discuss the impact of food deserts and findings from her recent report, “Examining the Impact of Food Deserts on Public Health in Detroit.”

A food desert is an area where mainstream grocery stores are distant or absent.

Panel respondents Michael Curis (Curis Enterprises), Malik Yakini (Detroit Black Food Security Network), Olga Savic (Detroit Economic Growth Corporation), and Oran Hesterman (Fair Food Foundation) will share insights on Gallagher’s report and highlight efforts to increase access to healthy food in Detroit.
