ANN ARBOR—The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today on Northwest Austin Utility District No. 1 v. Holder—an important case involving a section of the Voting Rights Act that places special requirements on regions with a history of racial bias in voting.

University of Michigan Law professor Ellen Katz is available to discuss the ruling.

Katz, whose work was cited in Justice Clarence Thomas’ opinion in the case, is a nationally recognized expert on the Voting Rights Act. In addition to writing and speaking widely on the topic, she also completed a detailed empirical study of litigation the Act produced.

Prior to her academic career, Katz served as a judicial clerk for Justice David Souter of the Supreme Court and Judge Judith Rogers of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Katz can be reached at: (734) 647-6241 (office), or (734) 834-2854 (cell), or by e-mail at [email protected]
