U-M experts available to discuss Alibaba IPO

ANN ARBOR—The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is set to make its Wall Street debut on Friday with a float that could raise $25 billion—the largest IPO ever.

Puneet Manchanda, professor of marketing, has just completed research on Taobao, Alibaba’s online shopping website that is similar to eBay and Amazon. Xun (Brian) Wu, assistant professor of strategy, has been following Alibaba since the firm’s early days and co-authored a paper about the company and the Chinese government’s role in electronic contracting. Wu’s work examines how competitive advantage is created and destroyed when industry landscapes are reshaped by economic, technological and institutional factors. Amiyatosh Purnanandam, professor of finance, can discuss Alibaba’s valuation and the short-term and long-run returns for IPOs in general.
