U-M faculty salary increases average 4.4 percent

ANN ARBOR—Faculty salary increases at the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus for 2008-09 averaged 4.4 percent, according to figures from the University’s Salary Record released today.

The median faculty salary increase (the 50th percentile) was 3.5 percent, the 25th percentile was 2.4 percent and the 75th percentile was 5.4 percent. Half of all faculty received an increase between 2.4 and 5.4 percent. The median is the point where the increase percentage for exactly half the group is greater than that and for half the group is less than that.

Teresa Sullivan, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, noted that these increases are somewhat higher than they have been over the last several years.

“The University continues to devote significant resources to our faculty and staff,” Sullivan said. “We appreciate our faculty and staff and they continue to remain one of our highest priorities of funding.”

Salary increases for staff averaged 3.2 percent. The median staff salary increase was 3 percent, the 25th percentile was 3 percent and the 75th percentile was 3.5 percent. The staff averages include salaries for employees in the U-M Health System and exclude bargained-for employees.

Merit salary increases for the University’s executive officers averaged 3.5 percent. Merit increases for deans averaged 3.3 percent.
