ANN ARBOR—With support from the Perrigo Co. of Allegan, Mich. (Nasdaq: PRGO), the University of Michigan’s new Life Sciences Institute will offer summer fellowships to a few highly qualified undergraduate students currently enrolled at any college or university in the state.

Perrigo/LSI fellows will spend 10 weeks at the institute working in the laboratory of a world-class scientist of their choosing. Some fellows also will participate in the U-M’s TechStart program for entrepreneurial training, with an emphasis on identifying and developing life science business opportunities. Upon completion of the annual summer program, some fellows also may be considered for internship opportunities at Perrigo.

The LSI, a new unit of the U-M, brings together researchers from a variety of scientific disciplines to collaborate in a state-of-the-art “lab without walls.” LSI’s faculty is exploring life at the level of cells and molecules–which is where disease occurs and where the best new therapies and cures will be found. The institute is housed in a 230,000 square-foot, $100 million laboratory facility, which opened in September 2003.

Perrigo Co. is the nation’s largest manufacturer of over-the-counter (nonprescription) pharmaceutical and nutritional products sold by supermarket, drug and mass merchandise chains under their own labels. The company sells analgesics, cough and cold remedies, gastrointestinal products, feminine hygiene items and nutritional products such as vitamins, nutritional supplements and nutritional drinks. Visit Perrigo on the Internet (www.perrigo.com).

The 2004 Perrigo/LSI Summer Fellowship will run from June 4 through Aug. 13.

The application deadline is Feb. 4, 2004.
