U-M names new dean of College of Engineering

ANN ARBOR—Stephen W. Director, a nationally recognized leader in undergraduate engineering education and expert in computer-aided design, has been named dean of the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Approved by the U-M Board of Regents at its April 18-19 meeting, Director’s appointment will be effective July 1. He also will serve as a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, with tenure.

Director is currently dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as the U.A. and Helen Whitaker Professor of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and professor of computer science. Prior to his 1991 appointment as dean of the Carnegie Mellon College of Engineering, Director served as head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the SRC Center of Excellence for Computer-Aided Design.
