EVENT: “The Nicaragua Solidarity Caravan: A Roundtable Discussion with Grassroots Activists”

Activists Julio Martínez, Claudia Ochoa and George Hernández, representing the Platform for Social Movements and Civil Society Organizations, will discuss the current state of human rights in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is currently facing one of the worst political crises it has seen in decades. In April, state repression of citizens protesting social security reforms unleashed a decade of accumulated grievances against the Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo government.

Citizens from across all sectors of Nicaraguan society took to the streets to protest state violence and authoritarianism. Clashes have left more than 500 people dead, thousands injured and jailed, and has prompted thousands to flee the country for Costa Rica or the United States.
