EVENT: The School of Public Health symposium, “Celebrating Progress in Population Health and Tobacco Control,” will focus on the challenges and opportunities in population health, with a strong emphasis on tobacco control.

The event also will honor former dean and faculty member Kenneth Warner for his impact on tobacco control policy. Dr. Julio Frenk, president of the University of Miami, will deliver the keynote address. Frenk, a physician and former secretary of Health of Mexico is an alumnus of the U-M School of Public Health.

Warner served on the U-M faculty since 1972, and was dean 2005-2010. His more than 200 professional publications focus on economic and policy aspects of disease prevention and health promotion, with a special emphasis on tobacco and health.

Warner was senior scientific editor of the 25th anniversary Surgeon General’s report on smoking and health, published in 1989. He was the founding director of U-M’s Tobacco Research Network. In 2001-2002, he served as the World Bank’s representative to negotiations on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the world’s first international health treaty.

He has testified before the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, and served as an adviser on tobacco policy issues to numerous governmental, volunteer and business organizations.

The U-M School of Public Health, which has roots at the university dating back to 1881, officially became a school in 1941. SPH has been celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout the year with a series of events.
