U-M students receive Hopwood Awards for creative writing
ANN ARBOR—The University of Michigan announced the summer winners of the Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards.
The awards are funded by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother. Past winners include Arthur Miller, Frank O’Hara, John Ciardi and Marge Piercy.
Summer Hopwood Short Fiction

- Riva Szostkowski, Ann Arbor, “The Rocket’s Red Glare,” $600.
Summer Hopwood Nonfiction
- Kathryn Orwig, Ann Arbor, “A Memoir of Kindness and Positivity,” $600.
- Joshua Rabotnick, Santa Clarita, Calif., “The Calls That Change Us” and “The Toll of Emergency Medicine,” $1,000.
