EVENT: The public is invited as students from the Detroit Community Based Research Program share the work they have done with 15 Detroit community organizations on research projects focused on the topics of community voices, environmental justice, youth development, and health and wellness.

Twenty-three students in the summer fellowship organized through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program worked full-time for nine weeks on community-driven projects for nonprofits in Detroit. They lived with their program cohort on Wayne State University’s campus and attended a variety of community events, tours and meetings, in addition to working with the organizations.

Other UROP summer programs held in Ann Arbor will celebrate the completion of their projects during the Aug. 1 event. They include the Biomedical and Life Sciences Summer Fellowship, Intel Semiconductor Research Corporation Summer Internship, Women and Gender Summer Fellowship Program, Michigan Community College Summer Research Fellowship and U-M Energy Institute Fellowship Program.

As examples of their work, one student in the Michigan Community College Summer Research Fellowship worked on a phantom heart model for ultrasound heart imaging and another worked with electric vehicle technology.

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program partners more than 1,400 first and second-year undergraduate students with 800 researchers every year for hands-on research experiences.

PLACE: The Detroit Community Based Research Program Student Showcase Aug. 2 will be held at the U-M Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Ave., Detroit (validated parking available for the structure at Parsons St. between Woodward and Cass). The Ann Arbor-based celebration Aug. 1 will take place at the Michigan League.
