MEDIA ADVISORY

DATE: 9:30 a.m.-noon, Dec. 5, 2012

EVENT: The director of the $150-million Knight News Challenge will visit campus to hear environmental journalism students pitch their ideas for innovative news-related products.

The students’ ideas range from printing news on tissue packages (a popular medium for advertising in Japan) to a website that watchdogs university cafeterias and tracks the origin of the food they serve.

The public is invited to drop in for all or part of this News Entrepreneurs’ Pitchfest, which will be judged by Knight Challenge Director John Bracken; Steve Dorsey, Detroit Media Partnership’s vice president of research and development; and Paula Gardner, director of community news at AnnArbor.com.

The trio will discuss the future of news from 9:30 a.m. to about 10:15 a.m. Then, six teams of students will pitch their ideas while the judges give feedback. The audience is invited to provide written suggestions and vote for a People’s Choice winner.
